An Essential Home Improvement Project

Posted by – March 16, 2010

Change your air-conditioning system to a central system. Units hanging in your window will make your life miserable by stopping you from having curtains and long drapes. They interfere with other things you would like to do in order to make your home more comfortable.

Installing the air conditioner units in the wall will lead to drafts and the leakage of cool air in the summer, as will window units. You will have to cover them, another procedure that can be avoided. You will find the cost of an efficient centralized system that can be controlled by sectors, to be not any more expensive in utility bills than the separate units.

You might be able to use the heating ducts without a totally new installation of a duct system. Look into prices offered for a centralized air conditioning system. The main bulky box will be outside of your home and give the house an appearance of being larger.

Home Improvement Tips

Improving your home is a good way to save money in today’s economy. Below are some tips for the home handyman.

If you are working on a tight budget consider doing some updating on your light fixtures. Outside you could install solar powered lights along the walk and driveway. It is a deterrent to burglars. In dark rooms or hallways, you can always install a solar tube. This works especially well in a room with paneled walls.

Another easy home improvement is to buy a can of paint and brighten up a room. If you are painting; buy the best quality paint you can afford. Choosing a good grade of paint ensures your room will maintain it’s new look longer. The better the paint, the more likely you can wash any spots or marks off the walls and it will look like new. Cheap paint tends to streak and generally does not hold up well to multiple washings. When doing trim painting, buy a package of foam disposable brushes. They are a real time saver. You never need to clean and dry brushes again.

Home Improvements

My significant other and I started on a home improvement project about 9 months ago. This has DEFINITELY been a learning experience for BOTH of us!!! This is basically going to be a “new” house when we get done in the next month or so, as we are doing everything from tearing out walls and re-inserting insulation to re-piping the plumbing and drains. From laying new sub-floors to putting in headers to support the floor. From redoing the bathroom completely to new light fixtures throughout. From having an electrician come in and redo all of the wiring to having a new breaker panel box put in. From redoing the kitchen cabinets to revamping the fake wall that was between the kitchen and the livingroom. From putting in ceiling fans to putting in a water-resistant light over the shower. We have even put new windows in throughout!!! Yep, it is DEFINITELY been a learning experience for us!!!

Creating a Peaceful Environment in Your Home

Simple touches and changes can make your home become more calming and serene. Use Earth tones in decorating. Off white walls, use deep colored woods, and try colors like green, clay, or browns when accenting.

Plants also add a real nice touch of serenity. Not only do they give a nice feeling of nature and making your atmosphere come alive but they also give off oxygen. Be sure to read up on the plants you’re bringing into your home. Ones that need to be in natural sunlight will give off more oxygen than those that don’t require a lot of light.

The use of candles will also add to a calm atmosphere. The soft lighting will give you an at peace feeling as you sit and relax in the room. Don’t forget scented candles! The sense of smell is a powerful one. Aromatherapy candles on the market are made from specific scents that are supposed to help you in various ways. When checking out aromatherapy candles be sure to read what each group of smells does and pick out a candle that best fits what you’re trying to obtain with the whole feeling of your home.
